Free Team Building Day out To Worthy Individuals

Do you work alone, or in a small team? Are the only other people you meet at work clients, or prospective clients? Everyone needs some down time, and even when you’re busy or think you can't afford it, especially then. Without time away from your business you can become jaded, make mistakes and lose your enthusiasm. So if you'd like a few hours away from the office team building with other self-started individuals then let us know.

Relationships are the corner stone of all business. It is often said that people buy from people not businesses, but it can be harder to nurture possible strategic partnerships between potential colleagues when you’re working in isolation, meeting only at other networking events, said beside someone for Four hours during a conference or training day is not the same as enjoying something more fun and memorable.

This team building is hoped to provide an opportunity for people to really get to know you, and vice versa, we hope it will nurture new friendships, new working relationships, new joint ventures and partnerships, maybe even a whole new company. This Team Building day out is offered by Michael Haigney,
www.webdesignomagh.com, it is a prize he won in a facebook competition earlier this year ran by the Derrynoid Centre. The event will be held at the Derrynoid centre, derrynoid.co.uk, and the team building will be provided by The Adventure Team, theadventureteam.co.uk

The Team Building will take place on Friday the 16th of December, refreshments will be provided and car-pooling will be organised to and from the venue, register here - christmasteambuilding.eventbrite.com

How can you get it so right and yet so wrong?

Saturday the 19th November, Belfast City Council is having a “switch on the Xmas lights” event at City Hall and the city centre is thronged with thousands of people of every age, babies in prams, toddlers, mums dads, twenty something’s, thirty something’s and us. There is a buzz of excitement and anticipation people are singing along with the Xmas songs, they are happy, festive and it’s great to be from Belfast. Donegall Place is filled with people right back to Castle Street, it’s fabulous, it’s amazing, and as Slade said “It’s Xmas”. They’ve got it so right!

But that’s where it all started to go wrong! Firstly it was almost impossible to hear the music or the commentators any further than half way down Donegall Place, the organisers must have anticipated a crowd down to Castle Street! Six o’clock arrived (the time for the lights) May McFetridge is introduced but there is something wrong with her microphone, we can barely hear the commentator but we can’t hear her, in the background we can hear a countdown from 10, at 0 nothing happens, the commentator tells us the lights will be switched on in 1.5 hours when the stars arrive?

Kids start complaining to mum, dad’s look as if to say “I didn’t want to be here anyway”, mum is trying to control frustrated kids, it’s all going wrong for the young families, what are you going to do with kids in the cold, in a crowd for an hour and a half?

We decided not to stand for 1.5 hours in the cold, not able to hear the music properly, not able to hear the announcements at all and decided to retire to the bar. What we thought at such an event was less important than what the families thought and they were voting with their feet, leaving in droves some with crying kids, parents trying to explain why they didn’t get what they expected. At our chosen bar, some distance away, we met at least 3 people who like us had left.

How could we get it closer to right? Put speakers along Donegall Place so that everyone can hear what’s going on and can enjoy the music and the craic, when you say the lights will be switched on at 6 o’clock; switch them on at 6 o’clock, don’t try to milk the event just to keep people in place.

Have music up to 5.55, then an announcement by somebody famous (if you don’t go to a panto, kids won’t know who May McFetridge is, come on guys) switch the lights on with a load of music, pizzazz and fireworks, then have entertainment for anyone who wants to stay and watch. Simple recipe tried and trusted.

Did the City Council get it wrong? No, they got it right; they just didn’t get it completely right. Was it a great night for the city? Yes, could it have been better? Yes. Was I proud to be a Belfast man in the crowd? Yes. Was I embarrassed as it went wrong? Yes.

I can obviously only speak of my experience and that of those like me who couldn’t get any closer to the stage, perhaps those at the very front enjoyed what happened, got more information, more music and a had a reason to wait until the switch on. Come on city Fathers; get it even more right next time and keep everyone happy!

Growing Your business through the Recession

Phillip Bain, who co-founded the highly successful mobile shredding company Shredbank in 2007 just after the collapse of Northern Rock, will give a talk on how to survive and thrive in a recession.

The seminar will focus on key areas that all businesses need to address in order to survive through difficult economic times.

The seminar is highly interactive, informative and practical.

Philip Bain and his business partner James Carson established ShredBank just after the collapse of Northern Rock and the beginning of one of the deepest recessions since the 1930’s.  ShredBank entered a document shredding market dominated by well-established multi-nationals and a deteriorating economic climate.  Despite this, under Philip’s commercial leadership ShredBank has become a fast growing multi-award winning company that has experienced high double digit growth year on year and disproved the notion that success in a recession is impossible.

Having recently won Entrepreneur of the Year 2010 and Young Businessperson of the Year 2011, we are delighted that Philip has agreed to share his thoughts and experiences on what it takes to start-up, grow and succeed in tough financial times. He will reflect on the importance of marketing, selling, innovation and having a business model that works.

Phillip will donate his seminar fee to the Prince's Trust 'Million Makers' corporate competition.

Shredbank will donate their time and delegate packs for this seminar as part of their fundraising efforts in support of the Prince's Trust.

STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters..... S. T. R.

STROKE  IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNISING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a  bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S  *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T  *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE  (Coherently)

(i.e. It is sunny out today.)

R  *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE:  Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

Marketing students should all be familiar with the quote from 19th Century US merchant John Wannamaker who said “I know that half of my advertising budget is wasted. The trouble is I don't know which half."
Fortunately in the 21st Century marketers don’t have to rely so much on guesswork or outdated metrics for assessing the impact of their campaigns. One of the big questions in marketing surrounds the return on investment from websites and wider internet marketing campaigns. With more money being allocated to web promotion it’s not surprising that businesses are paying more attention to how their websites are actually performing. With these questions in mind several technology companies, most notably, Google, have developed powerful analytics software systems. So what is web analytics and why is so important for businesses?

Getting Started
In a nutshell, web analytics is ‘the measurement, collection, reporting and analysis of internet data to understand what website visitors are doing on your website’. Onsite analytics, the most common form of web measurement, allows website owners to track a website visitor’s interaction on their website. While there are a multitude of competing web analytics providers, Google offer the market leading service in the form of Google Analytics. Google’s service is perfect for small to medium sized businesses that require an effective and easy to use online measurement system. It’s also free and easy to use, factors which have helped Google Analytics become the most widely used online measurement program - currently in use at 57% of the world’s top websites.

Using Analytics for Business Improvement.
The most common use of web analytics is to find out where your website visitors are actually coming from on the web. Analytics reports allow marketers and businesses to test the performance of their wider marketing campaigns, by showing how many web-visits came from online advertising campaigns, paid search activity and referrals from emails and other online media. Reports can even tell you where your web visitors are actually located and can show which countries, cities and regions are generating the most web traffic for your site.
The second main use of web analytics is to test the interaction that users have on specific websites. This is a very valuable tool for businesses as they can gain valuable insights into how their website visitors are using the site. As shown in the Google Analytics image, users can find out key metrics including the number of visitors, the average number of page views, the average time spent onsite and the overall bounce rates. The last two metrics are highly important in assessing the effectiveness of your site. If your analytics reports show a low rate of time spent onsite and high bounce rates then it reveals that your website is poor at maintaining user interest and engagement as site visitors are exiting the site quickly – all of which is bad news for the site owner.  Site owners can also check what’s working on the site so they can continually improve their website offering.

Analytics Trends
Web analytics is playing an increasingly important part in business and marketing. The vast majority of businesses now use an online analytics system and according to New Media Age, companies are fast increasing their investment in web analytics with 48% of companies intending to invest more staff resources to analytics.
And with continuing investment in analytics technology, maybe one day you might be able to find out which half of the advertising budget is being wasted.

Another First for a Northern Ireland Consultant

Congratulations to Steven Chambers who was the first candidate in Northern Ireland to achieve the internationally acclaimed Certified Management Consultant (CMC) award through the Institute of Consulting’s  professional discussion route.

Certified Management Consultant (CMC) is an international professional certification for management consulting professionals, awarded by institutes in 46 countries (as of December 2009). The CMC enjoys global reciprocity; consultants certified in one country are recognized in most other countries. The standards for CMC in technical competencies and professional conduct were developed by several of the international associations together with The International Council of Management Consulting Institutes (ICMCI).
Increasingly, both clients and employers are starting to recognise the CMC as a mark of a professional consultant. One of the challenges we face in this sector is that it is possible for anybody to market their services as a 'consultant' even though they may lack many of the core consulting competencies. The CMC provides you with a mark of excellence and shows that you are both able and committed to performing against a set of high consulting standards. It helps you stand out from the crowd - it demonstrates that you have been through a rigorous assessment process, and that you are acknowledged by the IC as being a confident and competent consultant.
Up until now, applying for the CMC has been perceived by many IC Members as a pretty arduous task involving a detailed application form, assignment case studies and an assessment centre (including presentation and role play).

Things have changed - up to 20 'pilot test' candidates are being invited to assess the potential merits of the PROFESSIONAL DISCUSSION (PD) route to achieving CMC.

The PD approach is no less rigorous and has been designed to fully test the capabilities of candidates against the stringent international requirements that follows-on from the successful implementation of the PD route for Chartered Manager. CMI successfully introduced this approximately 2 years ago and have seen about 30-35% increase in uptake in Chartered Manager status each year since the approach was introduced!

Here’s what Steven has to say about the process:
“Whilst challenging, it is much less bureaucratic than I have encountered in other processes. The application process was simple, straight forward and practical. As a qualified Assessor in other areas, the professional discussion was just that - a professional discussion.”

If you would like to express your interest in being considered for one of the 5 remaining places on the pilot programme, please email Ellie at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for details.
